Pride is a feeling of satisfaction in work well done. People take pride in working for a company with a good reputation, in being member of a successful team, in coming from a country or region, and take pride in their work. They are also proud about being able to do something well, such as sport or music. This is the good side of the coin. On the other side is the pride that is connected with vanity, the pride that goes before the fall.
Pride goes with job satisfaction and with recognition, and praise often comes as a result. Praise plays a larger part in workplace politics than many would like to believe. When satisfied customers praise a company, that is good. Compliments from competitors usually come as a pleasant surprise. But no praise is so highly valued as the personal congratulations from colleagues who recognise the achievements of their bosses, employees and team-mates.
